Great Blog Carrie-Lee,
Last December you tweeted about whether or not it was right to take your children to church on Christmas given the fact that you are not a believer. I was thinking to post a somewhat snarky remark about whether or not it was right for them to get presents from a jolly old man in a red suit in whom you also do not believe. My older sister succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 48 in December and her memorial service was held on the 27th so Christmas was a little different than usual for me.
I find it interesting that in this blog you mention your difficulty with understanding what it means to be created in the image of god and also mention how being in church gave you “a real sense of community.” In my understanding of the text the story of the Bible is not a road map on how I can get to heaven after I die but is instead a collection of stories told around campfires, letters written to friends, songs song by those despair to give wisdom to future generations so that we as a human race could learn how to live together in peace and harmony. The Bible never says that people as individuals are created in God’s image but instead says that humanity, we as a world community, are created in God’s image. And we are – we can either go around killing people in floods are doing that attack of Sodom and Gomorrah kind of thing, or we can be making rainbows and creating hope and peace.
At the end of the day, it is not the words with which people describe their faith that matters to me. It is instead their actions and interactions with others in the community which defines their true faith or core value system.
Let me put it another way -- If I go around everywhere telling everyone that I have faith in the stock market explaining that it is both what I feel in my heart and can prove with documentation of the historical performance of the down jones index, I'm sure a lot folks would come to the conclusion that I had faith in the stock market. Now if I did that and truly believed in my heart every word I was saying but at the same time invested all my assets in precious metals and CDs and owned no stock or stock related investment tool would you still say I had faith in the stock market? To me faith is not about what I tell others what I believe in, nor is it about what understand on an intellectual or an emotional level to be my guiding light -- faith is that core value system which evidences itself in how I conduct my daily life and interact with the world around me.

I really like this post. It is similar to the path I have traveled. At this point I'm not even sure about souls, at least souls that survive the body, but I honestly don't know and either way I don't think there is anything I can do about it. Whatever happens will happen. All I can do is live the best life I can here and now. But I like the non-confrontational way you express your ideas. So unlike the preachiness of so many YouTube atheists.
