Beach Photography

Wanted to share some of the new photos I’ve taken recently over the last few weeks. Many of them are of my daughter, Colleen. She’s always available and loves to play model! I’m by no means a professional, I just have fun taking pictures. Colleen and I love to steal away from everyone, grab the camera, go for a walk and take pictures. Click on the individual photo to see it at its best. Hope you enjoy them as much as we do. Which one do you like most?

Life in a Day

On July 24th, 2010, the world was asked to film their day, whatever happened – as it happened and upload it to Youtube. Many lucky people will be chosen to have their clips featured in a film entitled, “Life in a Day”. And while very likely my film won’t be chosen, I am honored to have submitted a film for the “Virtual Time Capsule”.

Please, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy a day in the life of the Touhey’s.

Your Faith

(for some reason this blog’s paragraph form isn’t coming out right – sorry!)

I received an email earlier today by a new found friend that has been re-examining her faith. I was asked a few questions, how I define faith, what faith I follow and what has lead me down that path. While I’m not sure all my facts may be 100% accurate, this was my reply:

I define faith as a gut feeling, a feeling deep inside that what you feel is what is true in your heart. For those that are faithful, they worship, love, and do as their instructed because not only is it what they’re religion dictates but they do it because they believe it is the path to the afterlife. It feels right.

I was raised protestant but have become agnostic/atheist more throughout the years. I’m never truly sure I ever actually believed in an omnipotent being. My family brought me to church, as I do my own children, because our congregational church never really preached at you, but taught the stories and morals of the bible as well as gave us a real sense of community.

When I was older, my parents told me they didn’t believe either. Not believing carries a terrible stigma along with it. You’re a heathen, you’re godless. How can you be a good person? For this reason, most of us never speak of it. Its one of the last groups that its okay to discriminate against.I

‘ve chosen this path because it simply felt right within the fiber of my being. I believe Jesus was a wonderful man but not the son of god.

I would say I lean more toward agnostic. Agnostics are not just those that “question the existence of god”, that’s actually a fallacy that most people have. Agnostics question whether or not there may be a higher power, and if there is, its likely way out of the realm of our ability to comprehend. If there is a god, performing rituals and acts in his name seems silly. To believe that he created us in his image (why not a dog, whale, cow or any of the other beings he created?) is the ultimate in human arrogance.

I appreciate all religion. Wickens have always fascinated me and I’ve known many. They worship the spirit of all living things.   Another is Buddhism where he told his followers never to worship him as a god – he is mortal.  And the Dalai Lama is chosen by giving toys to all the boys in Tibet – whichever boy picks the 4 toys of Buddha is the next Dalai Lama. What I don’t appreciate is what people, humans, do in the name of religion. If there was no religion on Earth, and everyone lived by a moral code of good – we could move on to bigger and better things. Get passed murder & war over who’s religion is more right and become a better species   on the whole.

I am an extremely spiritual person.  I believe that we do indeed have souls – but I’m perfectly fine not knowing what it is that happens to us once our bodies have stopped working. I’ll know when the day comes. I believe in ghosts, how do we know that there isn’t more to energy than what we’ve previously thought?  I get excited when I hear or read articles about new planets and solar systems being discovered. Life on other planets. What’s really out there? How did it really all begin? There are so many questions. But I don’t need answers.

Agnostics and Atheists do things in our daily lives because they are the right things to do, not because someone else tells us that we must or we’ll be tortured for eternity. Did you know that atheists have the lowest jail rate? Also the lowest divorce rate? Certainly they must have a moral compass if that’s the case.

I celebrate Christmas, Easter and all of the religious holidays I grew up with. I believe when I do that I’m celebrating stories that took place long ago and no one can debate that they changed the course of history.

I may not have all the answers. But I’m content with that. Discovery is an amazing thing.
I love my family, I teach them right from wrong and how to love, cherish and respect everyone and everything. I love my life.

The Cape Cod Cookie

The Cape Cod Cookie is officially open for business, well, kinda. As many of you already know I’ve been working hard on opening a part-time business in my home. There’s a lot of red tape to get through first, of course. I’m cleaning and rearranging my kitchen to make it more functional as well as up to code, studying to get my Servsafe certificate and filling out forms in triplicate for zoning and so on. I’ve made dozens and dozens of cookies as test batches. My family has been fortunate enough to have to try all of the cookies I make.

Last weekend was the first test run of sales and it went really well! I had about 10 dozen cookies to make for various orders. I knew it would be an eye opening experience and I was right. As soon as the weekend came and I began preparing orders I could see what needed to be done differently. How cookies needed to be baked and in what order. What needs to cool before what. What packing material works better than others and so on. My next batch of deliveries will be the weekend before Mothers Day. So if you’d like to send mom a gift that’s sure to arrive in time, or you’d like to indulge in some cookies yourself (and I highly suggest you do) take a peek at The Cape Cod Cookie – any orders place between now and through the next two weeks will be shipped out to arrive around May 5th.

Hopefully some day this will turn into a full time job and I’ll be able to stay home with the kids, until then it will be just a part time gig. My husband and I have always dreamed, since we were dating, that we’d open a little shop of some sort. I picture a nice little cottage shop that says, The Cape Cod Cookie – Cafe and Bakery.  A place to get a great cup of coffee, talk with locals, grab a donut or breakfast sandwich in the morning, cookies and cakes in the afternoon for dessert while you read the paper in peace. I can’t wait for the day that happens, until then, I’m working towards it one cookie at a time…
